What cookies are

A cookie is a small text file a website stores in your browser. It lets a site remember something between page loads or visits — for example, that you have already answered a question like this one. Similar technologies such as localStorage do the same job, and we treat them the same way in this policy.

Cookies set by this site are called first-party cookies. Cookies set by another company through this site are third-party cookies. Both are covered below.

The two categories we use

Always on

Needed for the site to work and to remember your cookie choice. Without these we would have to ask you about cookies on every single page. They set no analytics or advertising identifiers, and they cannot be switched off.

Analytics

Off by default

Help us understand how many people visit, which pages they use, and where they get stuck, so we can keep the site relevant and easy to use. This can include a playback recording of your visit — pointer movement, clicks, scrolling and page changes — used to build aggregate heatmaps. These load only after you allow them. If you never allow them, the scripts are never added to the page and no analytics request is made.

Changing your mind

You can change your choice at any time — there is a link in the footer of every page, and the control below opens the same panel.

Turning analytics off takes effect immediately: we remove the analytics scripts from the page and delete the analytics cookies we are able to reach. A small number of analytics cookies may be stored on a third party’s own domain, which our site cannot delete; you can remove those yourself through your browser settings. For a completely clean slate, reload the page after switching analytics off.

We ask again after 12 months, so a decision does not last indefinitely.

Global Privacy Control

If your browser or a privacy extension sends the Global Privacy Control signal, we honour it automatically: analytics stays switched off and we do not show you a cookie banner at all. An analytics grant saved before the signal was detected does not override it. We publish our support at /.well-known/gpc.json, and the Cookie Settings panel confirms when the signal has been detected.

You can still switch analytics on yourself in Cookie Settings. A choice to enable analytics while the panel shows that GPC is active is recorded as an explicit site-specific override; you can withdraw it at any time.

Controlling cookies in your browser

Your browser can block or delete cookies for any site, independently of the choice you make here. Blocking all cookies may stop parts of this site from working, including our ability to remember your cookie preference. Instructions for the common browsers:
